Daphne man charged with fentanyl trafficking after girlfriend’s overdose

A Daphne man faces multiple felony drug charges after his girlfriend allegedly overdosed earlier this month.

Steven L. Yelding, 48, was officially charged by the Baldwin County District Attorney’s Office Wednesday on trafficking fentanyl, three counts of possessing a controlled substance and possessing marijuana. He is out on $75,000 bond.

According to Baldwin County Court records, Yelding was at a hotel in Malbis when he called 911 to report that his girlfriend was overdosing. He followed her to a local ER where she was transported by ambulance.

Her current condition was not immediately known.

Police investigated the hotel room where Yelding was at and found the following: 15.1 grams of fentanyl, 49.2 grams of marijuana, 54 hydrocodone pills, six buprenorphine hydrochloride pills, 30 buprenorphine and naloxone pills, used syringes, and a marijuana grinder containing marijuana that was located in the room.

Yelding was arrested following a traffic stop while leaving the emergency room. During the traffic stop, police also found approximately 0.2 grams of methamphetamine.

Daphne Police Sgt. Jason Vannoy said that officers were at risk during the search and subsequent evidence packaging, but did not have any skin contact with the fentanyl. He said the woman who overdosed recovered at the Malbis ER.

Fentanyl continues to be a major issue law enforcement is focusing on as overdoses continue to rise in Alabama and elsewhere in the U.S. State legislation being introduced this spring would increase penalties against people found guilty of trafficking fentanyl.

Under the legislation, which is HB1, anyone who found guilty of trafficking more than 8 grams of the drug could face life imprisonment.
