UAB Athletics Hall of Fame announces Class of 2024
The UAB Athletics Hall of Fame will add five members on Nov. 1 with the inductions of Drew Ferguson, Izell Reese, Frank Schaffner, Sam Serley and Marla Townsend.
The five form the Class of 2024, which was announced by the UAB Department of Athletics on Friday afternoon.
The seventh class for the UAB Athletics Hall of Fame will bring its membership to 33.
Ferguson was the first head athletic trainer and director of sports medicine for UAB athletics, working with another member of the UAB Athletics Hall of Fame, Gene Bartow. Also one of the founders of what is now Children’s of Alabama Sports Medicine, Ferguson has remained associated with UAB for more than 40 years.
The second UAB player chosen in the NFL Draft, Izell played for the Blazers from 1994 through 1997, yet remains third in school history in solo tackles. A sixth-round selection of the Dallas Cowboys, the safety played in 94 NFL games across seven seasons with the Cowboys, Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills.
Schaffner was the first All-American in UAB history during his time with the men’s tennis team from 1991 through 1994. A Great Midwest Conference Player of the Year Award winner, Schaffner ranked as high as No. 7 nationally in singles while with the Blazers.
Serley starred for the UAB volleyball team from 2009 through 2012 and remains the school’s career leader with 564 blocks. Serley was both a three-time All-Conference USA selection and a three-time AVCA All-American.
Townsend served as the Blazers’ first softball coach in 2000 and headed the program for 19 seasons. The three-time Conference USA Coach of the Year led UAB to five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament from 2010 through 2014, including a Super Regional trip in 2013.
The induction ceremony for the Class of 2024 will be held at 7 p.m. CST Nov. 1 at The Florentine in Birmingham. Tickets for the event can be purchased online.
