The accolades continue to roll in for Alabama’s largest city.

Huntsville has been named the nation’s fourth-most prosperous city by MyEListing.com. The ratings were based on five-year studies in population change, median household income and value of owner-occupied homes change as well as 2022 unemployment rate, college education and population in poverty in 2021.

Huntsville, of course, last year was named the country’s Best Place to Live by U.S. News & World Report.

Huntsville is the only Alabama city to appear on the list, which included 25 metro areas.

The website also compiled a list of “least prosperous cities” in the country and Mobile was the only state city on the list at No. 8.

Metro areas with a population of at least 200,000 were studied for the analysis, the website said.

“A city must have the capability for progress and vitality in order to be considered a thriving city in the long run,” the website said of its analysis. “It must be better today than it was yesterday and have the momentum to continue improving in the future in order to stay on the radar.”

In the MyEListing.com analysis, Huntsville had experienced a 9% population growth over the last five years while its median household income had increased 25% and its value of owner-occupied homes had gone up 20% over the same time period. The analysis also said Huntsville has a 2% unemployment rate in 2022 and 43% of its residents had at least one college degree. The city’s poverty rate was 10% in 2021.

The Provo-Orem metro area in Utah topped the most prosperous list, followed by Boise City, Idaho and the northwest Arkansas corridor of Fayetteville, Springdale and Rogers. At No. 5 was the Austin metro that included Round Rock and Georgetown in Texas.

In spots 6-10 are North Port, Sarasota and Bradenton on Florida’s Gulf Coast; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Burlington and South Burlington in Vermont, Seattle-Tacoma in Washington and Salt Lake City, Utah.

The analysis of Mobile pointed to a slight decrease in population as well as modest growth in household income and a poverty rate of 18%.

The metro area of Hickory, Lenoir and Morganton in North Carolina led the least prosperous list.

“For the cities ranked with the worst prosperity, one can hope this data creates awareness and urgency to solve its problems for a better future,” the website said.
