Hugh Freeze gives midweek update on Auburn’s QB room ahead of New Mexico game

During his Monday press conference, Hugh Freeze said a change at quarterback was possible going into Week 3.

He mentioned that he had a meeting scheduled with both Payton Thorne and Hank Brown to review film from the Cal loss. After that meeting, Freeze said he learned “quite a bit,” about both players and how they process things.

Thorne started for Auburn against Cal and threw four interceptions. Throughout the week since, Freeze reiterated that he was satisfied with the gameplan and play calling, but Thorne’s execution on certain plays was poor.

In the film session with both quarterbacks, Freeze said he was going to go over a reel of “about 15 plays that were just things we have to get right and are typically done right in practice.”

When speaking during the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday, Freeze didn’t give too much insight into what could happen at quarterback on Saturday but maintained that he’s willing to make a change if necessary.

“There’s a very, a very short leash on us playing as poorly as we did in certain moments in that game at that position,” Freeze said.

Auburn has only practiced once since Freeze met with Thorne and Brown on Monday, so it’s hard to gather much about who might have the edge.

Freeze talked Monday about how it’s hard for him to move away from Thorne based on how well he’s played in practice and during fall camp, but the in-game performance still has to improve.

Brown, a redshirt freshman, was named Auburn’s backup quarterback going into the season. His only action last season came in Auburn’s Music City Bowl loss to Maryland where he was 7-of-9 passing for 132 yards.

He featured early this season in Auburn’s 73-3 season-opening win against Alabama A&M, throwing two touchdown passes on 3-of-5 passing for 96 yards.

Despite only being one practice into the week, Freeze said that Brown practiced well.

“Be curious to see how they both respond today with the reps are given as we continue to grade them out,” Freeze said Wednesday.
