How Jam Miller embodied a Kalen DeBoer tenet the best of any Alabama player

Spend five minutes inside the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility, and chances are good you’ll hear at least one person talk about a 1-0 mindset.

OK, maybe more than five minutes. But it won’t take long.

New Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer has made the phrase a tenet of the program. A guiding principle in everything.

It comes down to trying to win the next snap. Win the next moment. Succeed now, no matter what happened previously.

The mantra extends past the football field, but that’s where it’s most easy to notice. Saban Field specifically is where Jam Miller displayed buy-in to the phrase like no other player for the Crimson Tide.

On one play Saturday in the third quarter vs. USF, Miller ran right and gained 13 yards. There was one major problem, he fumbled at the end of it.

The Bulls recovered and scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive to draw within 14-13 with 9:35 left in the third quarter.

“Of course, I was a little heated about that (fumble),” Miller said.

Frustrated sure, but not stuck. At least not for the rest of the game. That one mistake wouldn’t determine how that game would be remembered for him.

When Miller had a chance to break a 56-yard touchdown run, he did. Miller read his blocks, ran right outside and scampered for the touchdown that put the game out of reach for South Florida.

“You always have to be 1-0 and be ready for the next play,” Miller said.

He was then, and he finished with a strong day. Miller tallied 140 rushing yards, and per Pro Football Focus, 81 of those yards came after contact. He also forced four missed tackles.

It won’t show in his bio or stats, but he also managed to embody what DeBoer seeks, about as well as anyone has so far this season. Miller shook off a bad play and won another, in a big way.
