South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez doubtful for Ohio game

South Alabama starting quarterback Gio Lopez is officially listed as doubtful for Saturday’s game at Ohio, a team spokesman told AL.com.

Lopez, a redshirt freshman, suffered a toe injury during the second half of the Jaguars’ season-opening 52-38 loss last week vs. North Texas, in which he set school records with 432 passing yards and 497 yards of total offense and accounted for four touchdowns. Lopez, who was limited in practice all week, is participating in pre-game warm-ups prior to the Ohio game, but is unlikely to play.

Sophomore Bishop Davenport is expected to start in Lopez’s place against the Bobcats (0-1), with true freshman Jared Hollins serving as the backup for the Jaguars (0-1). Davenport made his South Alabama debut last week vs. North Texas, entering the game for one play in the second quarter after Lopez’s helmet was knocked off and rushing for three yards and a first down (NCAA rules require players who lose their helmet to sit out at least one play).

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound Davenport transferred to South Alabama from Utah State, where he played in three games (starting one) as a true freshman in 2022. The Spring, Texas, native completed 27 of 44 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions for the Aggies, while also rushing for two scores.

It’s not entirely clear how long Lopez might be sidelined. The Jaguars have a short week coming up with a Thursday night home game vs. Northwestern State, then play again the following Thursday (Sept. 19) at Appalachian State.

South Alabama quarterback Dallas Davis suffered a similar injury in 2017, but played the following week. He then sat out a game before returning after the Jaguars had an open date.

Kickoff for South Alabama at Ohio is set for 5 p.m. at Peden Stadium in Athens, Ohio. The game will stream live via ESPN+.
