Second Volleyball Player of the Week pushed her career assist total past 2,000

The Week 2 State Volleyball Player of the Week had another one of her consistently excellent performances and was rewarded with 30 percent of the votes in the poll.

Saraland senior setter Sophia Saxon received 1,740 of the 5,772 total votes to earn the honors. She had 143 assists as the Spartans went 7-2 last week. In her career, the 5-foot-6 Saxon has 2,078 assists after last week’s performances.

Saraland is 16-3 on the year and ranked third in Class 6A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Geneva senior outside hitter RayAnna Ausley finished second in a close finish for the runner-up spot. She had 14.4 percent of the votes while third-place finisher Zaria Rudolph of Montgomery Catholic had 14.1 percent.

Ausley had 56 kills and 75 digs as Class 4A eighth-ranked Geneva continued its unbeaten start to the season. The Panthers won seven matches last week and are now 13-0 on the season.

Sophomore Rudolph, an outside hitter and middle blocker, had 30 kills, 29 digs, eight blocks and four aces for the Class 5A top-ranked Knights.
