LSU overpaid Brian Kelly by more than $1 million in 2022
LSU accidentally overpaid football coach Brian Kelly by more than $1 million in 2022, according to a report Wednesday by the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.
According to the report, Kelly reached what is known as an Employment and License IP agreement with LSU when he signed his 10-year, $95 million contract upon being hired last year. As part of that agreement, Kelly was to receive direct payments to his bank account.
Due to a clerical error, Kelly was paid twice in both May and June 2022. That resulted in an overpayment of $1,001,368 to the first-year coach, which wasn’t detected until November by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s office.
LSU will recoup its money, at least eventually. Rather than have Kelly cut a huge check, his salary will be docked slightly each pay period until the full amount is repaid.
Kelly went 10-4 in his first season at LSU, leading the Tigers to the SEC championship game and a victory in the Citrus Bowl.
