Alabama schools cancel class, increase security after Georgia school shooting

Eufaula City Schools canceled all classes and after-school activities Thursday after receiving a “threat of violence,” officials said.

It is unclear what type of threat was made, but officials said it was targeted at the district’s high school.

In a notice Wednesday evening, district leaders asked all students and staff not to report to school Thursday. Administrators were expected to report as normal.

Officials did not immediately respond to a request for an update Thursday morning. No other information has been released by the district since its original notice.

“ECS is working with the Eufaula Police Dept. and will provide more information as soon as possible,” the statement said.

The alert came on the same day that a 14-year-old shot and killed two teachers and two students at a Georgia high school, according to news reports. In recent months, several students have been shot and injured in Alabama schools.

In North Alabama, Walker County officials announced an “increased security presence” at Oakman area schools Thursday following threats made on social media.

“It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where we have to deal with these types of issues,” Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith wrote in a statement Wednesday evening. “We are not immune; however, I’m thankful for the board of education who helps us have deputies in our schools and the tools they provide to keep our children and grandchildren safe. With the most recent school shooting, it serves as a reminder that having deputies on school campuses is very important in today’s world.”

Alabama schools have seen an increasing number of threats in recent years, according to a 2023 AL.com analysis. Schools reported 45 bomb threats in the 2022-23 school year and more than 6,000 instances of a threat or intimidation by a student.
