Breaking down Alabama’s billion-dollar offseason in the NFL

Shortly after reports appeared on Wednesday that cornerback Patrick Surtain II and the Denver Broncos had agreed on a four-year, $96 million contract extension, the Alabama football program proclaimed on social media: “Former Alabama players have signed $1 billion in offseason NFL contracts this year.”

When Surtain signs his contract extension, he’ll become the eighth former Crimson Tide player to do so in the NFL between the end of 2023 campaign and Thursday night’s kickoff to the 2024 season. Twelve more Alabama alumni who remain on NFL active rosters signed free-agent contracts this offseason.

Those 20 contracts total 56 seasons for about $1.007 billion, including $611.729 million in guaranteed money.

But Alabama alumni didn’t need Surtain’s deal to surpass $1 billion in signed contracts this offseason.

The football program’s figures included only players who signed extensions or free-agent deals. But 10 players were drafted from Alabama in April, and they signed contracts worth a collective $95.284 million. Even with the $4.101 million deal of safety Jaylen Key, who didn’t make the New York Jets’ active roster, taken off the rookies’ total, Alabama’s NFL contingent already was past $1 billion in contracts before Surtain’s deal with the drafted players included.

With the rookies part of the total, too, Crimson Tide players on NFL active rosters signed contracts worth about $1.098 billion this offseason. And those 29 players are less than half the number of Alabama alumni waiting to play in the opening games of the NFL season this week.

Former Alabama players who agreed to extensions or free-agent contracts this offseason include:

· Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa: Four years for $212.4 million with $167.171 in guaranteed money.

· Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II: Four years for $96 million with $77.5 million in guaranteed money.

· Baltimore Ravens safety Eddie Jackson: One year for $1.5 million with $1 million in guaranteed money.

· Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand: One year for $1.292 million with $167,000 in guaranteed money.

· Los Angeles Chargers center Bradley Bozeman: One year for $1.125 million.

Defensive backs Anthony Averett, Tony Brown, Ronnie Harrison and Kareem Jackson signed free-agent deals this offseason, but the Alabama alumni did not survive the cut from the preseason roster to the regular-season active roster with their teams.

The contracts for the players drafted from Alabama in April who are preparing to start their first NFL seasons as active-roster players this week include (with all the contracts for four years):

· Tennessee Titans offensive tackle J.C. Latham: $26.045 million with $26.045 million in guaranteed money.
