Labor Day 2024: What’s open, what’s closed on Monday? Banks, grocery stores, mall, drugs stores

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 2 and the holiday changes schedules for government offices and some businesses.

The day is a time set aside to remember the contributions workers – specifically organized labor – have made to the U.S. It’s also the unofficial end of summer and many people celebrate the holiday with gatherings and special events.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882. Twelve years later, President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September of each year as Labor Day.

Labor Day is a federal holiday, meaning most offices are closed and mail won’t run. Many grocery stores, retailers and restaurants are open, however. It’s always best to check ahead with your favorite location just to confirm hours.
