Alabama football’s Kalen DeBoer talks injuries, freshmen and more after WKU win

Alabama football had little trouble in the season opener against Western Kentucky.

The Crimson Tide crushed the Hilltoppers 63-0 on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Jalen Milroe contributed five touchdowns, Ryan Williams caught two long passes for scores, and safety Keon Sabb snagged two interceptions in the first quarter.

After his debut with Alabama, coach Kalen DeBoer held his postgame press conference. Here’s a recap of some of what he said.

Kalen DeBoer postgame press conference

  • DeBoer said Alabama has some things it will able to see on film that it needs to correct.
  • DeBoer said Williams coming across the middle on the second touchdown was really focused and it doesn’t seem like the game is too fast for him. “A lot of attention gets thrown his way but he’s just gone about it really humble,” DeBoer said.
  • DeBoer on Kadyn Proctor, who sustained an injury in pregame warmups: “We’ll continue to evaluate tomorrow to see the severity of it and know more as the week goes on.”
  • DeBoer said he didn’t think the lights got too bright for many of the freshmen.
  • “Both,” DeBoer said when he was asked if he would prefer big plays or more sustained drives.
  • Elijah Pritchett had to play left tackle in a pinch, and DeBoer said he was excited about the way he responded. Pritchett played right tackle most of spring, but he had experience at left tackle in the spring.
  • On Keon Sabb: “He was ready for that moment.”
  • “It was a lot of fun,” DeBoer said of his first game at Bryant-Denny Stadium. “Our fans were amazing in cheering loud. Can’t wait to do it again a week from now.”
  • Offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan had to come down from the booth because headset communications were down. Then he went back up to the press box. But the headsets went down a second time. So he had to come back. DeBoer said that was a new one for him, having headsets go down.
  • DeBoer on the defensive rotations: “It’s huge. I’m really glad we got that opportunity. That’s part of what we want to do anyway, keeping guys fresh.”
  • DeBoer thought the secondary didn’t have any big mistakes. “For the most part, I thought they did a great job.”
  • DeBoer thought Keon Sabb’s interceptions set the tone for the game.
