A woman is in the Morgan County jail after being accused of attacking an elderly woman with a hammer in Decatur today.

Police said the attack occurred this morning when they received a call that a woman had assaulted an elderly woman with a hammer before leaving the scene in a vehicle.

A witness reportedly yelled at the suspect to stop, then followed her in their vehicle until police arrived.

Police stopped the vehicle and identified the suspect as Mary Hughes. Hughes was charged with assault first degree and booked into the Morgan County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Police located the victim, who was suffering from multiple injuries. She was transported to Huntsville Hospital to receive treatment.
