Master list of license plates too offensive for Alabama roads

AUSCKS? Try again.

FJBIDEN or FDTRUMP? Rejected.

SKANK, IMHIGH or SPANKME? Nope, nope and nope.

The list of license plates banned by the Alabama Department of Revenue covers everything from the polarizing – disparaging a sports team or politician- to the sexual or even the head scratching (ANTHRAX, WECRAP and ORGY (with a “Y”) or ORGIE (with an “IE.)

The Alabama Department of Revenue has a list of more than 5,000 license plates that have been banned due to offensive content. In general, the rejected license plates don’t make the cut because they refer to sex, drugs, violence, race, body parts or other subjects.

An administrative rule gives DOR the authority to determine whether a license plate is considered offensive. The rule, adopted in 1982, reads that no license plate will be issued “which contains objectionable language or symbols which are considered by the Department of Revenue to be offensive to the peace and dignity of the State of Alabama.”

Many of the banned license plates come as tag buyers attempt to circumvent the system with a combination of letters and numbers or trying to use a zero instead of an “O,” or a 5 instead of an “S.” You see this a lot with the combination of “55″, when coupled with a University of Alabama tag can look like “Ass” – 55BAMA, 55W0PN, 55WH0L, 55RTR, 55MANN and 55WHPN. And then there’s PHATA55, 55HLE, B4DA55 and KIKA55 – you get the idea.

There’s an entire process for how tag requests are made and approved. When a tag buyer requests a license plate or goes through the online reservation system, the request gets automatically checked against the banned list. Requests that require follow up go to state workers who investigation the request.

There is an appeals process but it’s rarely used and most of those who receive a rejection just go with a different combination.
