Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is a finalist for The Associated Press’ 2022 NFL Most Valuable Player Award.

The former Alabama signal-caller joins Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the finalists for the MVP honor.

In his second season as Philadelphia’s quarterback, Hurts has helped the Eagles reach Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers. Philadelphia has a 15-1 record with Hurts under center this season, including a 38-7 playoff victory over the New York Giants on Sunday.

During the regular season, Hurts completed 306-of-460 passes for 3,701 yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions and ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on 165 carries.

Four players from Alabama high schools and colleges have won the AP NFL Most Valuable Player Award, which has been presented annually since 1957. Those winners have been Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr (Sidney Lanier, Alabama) in 1966, Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler (Foley, Alabama) in 1974, Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander (Alabama) in 2005 and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (Auburn) in 2015.

Hurts, Jefferson and Mahomes also are the finalists for the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Brian Daboll, who was Hurts’ offensive coordinator at Alabama during the 2017 season, is a finalist for the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award, along with Doug Pederson of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers.

Daboll left Alabama to become the offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. After four seasons in that position, Daboll took the reins of the New York Giants in 2022 and guided the team to a 9-7-1 record and its first playoff berth since 2016. The Giants defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-24 on Jan. 15 for New York’s first postseason victory since defeating the New England Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5, 2012.

San Francisco defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is a finalist for the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award, along with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.

A former Jess Lanier High School and Alabama standout, Ryans is in his second season as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator. San Francisco led the NFL in scoring defense during the 2022 regular season.

Other AP NFL award finalists include:

· Defensive Player of the Year: 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa, Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones and Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons

· Offensive Rookie of the Year: 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III and Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson

· Defensive Rookie of the Year: Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner, Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson and Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen

· Comeback Player of the Year: Giants running back Saquon Barkley, 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith

The winners will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 9. A nationwide panel of 50 media members who cover the NFL voted on the awards before the start of the playoffs.
