These engineering students are working to keep your electronics (even) cooler
An international engineering competition recently lauded work by University of North Alabama graduate students that aims to ensure high-power electronic devices run smoothly.
A team from UNA’s Applied Manufacturing Engineering program was awarded fourth place in the 2024 ASME K-16/IEEE EPS Heat Sink Design Competition. The competition attracts teams from around the world, and the UNA LeoSink team was one of seven semifinalists.
Heat sinks help cool off electronic devices like smartphones and computer graphics cards by transferring the heat they generate away from the device into surrounding air or liquid, said Sayeed Shohag, an assistant professor in the Department of Engineering and Industrial Professions at UNA and sponsor of the LeoSink team.
