Key Alabama football battles have more questions than answers before first game

It didn’t take a question for Alabama football offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic to provide an indication of where the right tackle battle stands.

“We’ve been talking to you about the right tackle battle throughout camp …” a reporter began to say after practice Wednesday.

Then Kapilovic jumped in.

“We’re going to be talking about it all through the season,” Kaplivoc said.

Wilkin Formby and Elijah Pritchett have been competing all August for possession of the right tackle spot. With the first game this Saturday, there doesn’t seem to be a clear winner, if the way the coaches have talked is any indication.

“You could easily see us playing six offensive linemen throughout the game, rotating at one position,” Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer said on the SEC teleconference.

He said that spot is right tackle.

It’s just one position battle where either a resolution hasn’t been reached or it hasn’t been made public with Alabama set to face Western Kentucky on Saturday (6 p.m., ESPN) at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Here are two others.

Wide receiver

Here’s another spot where it’s quite possible, and likely, we see more than three guys.

The top three right now are most likely Germie Bernard, Kendrick Law and Kobe Prentice, but there will be more in the mix such as a freshman Ryan Williams.

“I’d say we’re fairly confident with anywhere from five to seven, but it’s hard to put a number on that,” DeBoer said. “There are some guys, depending on the flow of the game, could end up playing more or less. There’s a rotation. We run a lot of ones and twos in every practice like most people do. We have six solid guys for sure and there are a couple there that are pushing pretty hard.”

The six are likely Bernard, Law, Prentice, Williams, Cole Adams and Emmanuel Henderson Jr. Expand past that, and freshmen Rico Scott and Caleb Odom are two players with intrigue.

“I think early in the season, you want to give as many guys as you think can be in the mix a chance,” DeBoer said. “That being said, you’ve got to make sure you can execute and guys can get into a rhythm as well.”

Cornerback

Domani Jackson, the Southern Cal transfer, seems to have all but locked up one cornerback spot. As for the other opposite him, the answer isn’t clear quite yet.

Will it be the experienced option, Wake Forest transfer DaShawn Jones? Or will the five-star talented freshman Zabien Brown get the nod?

Alabama could pick just one. But it also sounds plausible there could be a rotation at cornerback, too.

“We do have a plan and an approach in terms of how we want to deploy the guys, how many reps guys are going to be getting on the outside,” said cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist. “Obviously, in the moment, whatever happens throughout the game, we’ll be able to adjust what we need to adjust, change what we need to change.”
