Undrafted Alabama prep stars still standing after NFL roster cuts

After NFL teams reduced their 90-player preseason rosters to the regular-season limit of 53 active players on Tuesday, two undrafted rookies who were Alabama high school standouts remained in the league.

Cleveland Browns guard Javion Cohen and New England Patriots safety Dell Pettus still held roster spots after more than 1,000 players lost theirs since the end of the preseason schedule.

Cohen played for Alabama in the 2020, 2021 and 2022 seasons before completing his college career at Miami (Fla.). Before joining the Crimson Tide, Cohen was a second-team All-State selection for Central-Phenix City’s AHSAA Class 7A championship team in 2018 and a first-team All-State pick in 2019, when the Red Devils were the state runners-up.

Pettus signed with the Patriots after starting 61 consecutive games for Troy. Before joining the Trojans, Pettus was a second-team All-State selection for Sparkman in 2018 after helping the Harvest high school earn its first playoff berth in 11 years in 2017.

While the players have cleared one big hurdle toward playing in the NFL this season, league rosters aren’t set in stone with Wednesday expected to be a volatile day in roster construction as team decision-makers look over the available players waived and released by the other clubs in the league.

While two undrafted rookies with Alabama football roots survived the cut to 53, five players with Alabama football roots who were drafted in April did not. The drafted rookies waived on Tuesday included:

· Defensive back Jaylin Simpson (Auburn): Drafted at No. 164 by the Indianapolis Colts.

· Wide receiver Tejhaun Palmer (UAB): Drafted at No. 191 by the Arizona Cardinals.

· Cornerback D.J. James (Spanish Fort, Auburn): Drafted at No. 192 by the Seattle Seahawks.

· Defensive tackle Marcus Harris (Park Crossing, Auburn): Drafted at No. 247 by the Houston Texans.

· Safety Jaylen Key (UAB/Alabama): Drafted No. 257 by the New York Jets.

Former Alabama cornerback Khyree Jackson was drafted at No. 108 from Oregon by the Minnesota Vikings. Jackson died in a traffic accident on July 6.

Former Alabama running back Keilan Robinson was drafted at No. 167 from Texas by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’ll start the season on injured reserve, but the Jaguars have designated him to return in 2024. He will have to miss at least the first four games of the season.

Twenty other 2024 draft picks who played at Alabama high schools and colleges remain on NFL rosters:
