Fairfield woman accused of helping Alabama inmate in his latest escape

A Fairfield woman is behind bars after authorities say she helped a state prison inmate escape custody.

Catrina Johnson, 36, is charged with first-degree hindering prosecution in Tuesday’s getaway of 34-year-old Antwone Wilson, who has several previous escapes on his record including a jump from a second-story courthouse bathroom in St. Clair County.

Johnson remains held in the St. Clair County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Wilson is serving a life sentence for a 2012 spate of robberies on Birmingham’s Southside – including three in one night.

The ordeal began Tuesday morning when authorities left Donaldson just before 8 a.m. to take Wilson – who ADOC officials label as a Gangster Disciple gang member – to UAB Highlands for a medical appointment.

When they got to the hospital about 8:45 a.m., Wilson took off running as he was being removed from the transport vehicle.

The two officers transporting him chased Wilson until he got in a waiting vehicle. The getaway car was initially said to be a black Mercedes but turned out to be a Dodge.

The ADOC Law Enforcement Services Division alerted local and state authorities about the escape.

With the help of license plate readers, Pell City police shortly before 11:30 a.m. found Johnson’s car in the parking lot of the Pell City Walmart. Wilson was found in the backseat of the car and taken into custody without further incident.

ADOC officials said Johnson was located at a nearby hotel and detained by ALEA SBI agents.

Wilson is now charged with first-degree escape.

ADOC Commissioner John Hamm thanked all of the agencies who helped in the successful search for Wilson.

Wilson, of Birmingham, has tried multiple escapes. He published a book in 2020 called Wanted Dead or Alive, Surviving Life Without Parole.

He and another inmate in 2017 escaped the St. Clair Correctional Facility.

Charging documents in the 2017 escape case said he “did unlawfully make, obtain or possess” a gun, bolt cutters and a hacksaw blade.

While he was on the run in that case, he called into a local television station saying he broke out of prison because he’s innocent of the robbery for which he received the life sentence.

The U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force and Brevard County sheriff’s deputies later recaptured Wilson at a hotel in Titusville, Fla. where he surrendered without incident.

In May of 2022, Wilson was set to go on trial for the 2017 escape when, about 9:30 a.m., he jumped from a second-story courthouse bathroom in Ashville in another getaway attempt.

Authorities said Wilson was taken to the bathroom after he said he wasn’t feeling well.

They heard a toilet flush and then realized Wilson didn’t emerge from the restroom.

Deputies realized Wilson had jumped from the bathroom window. He was quickly taken into custody a short distance from the courthouse.

Authorities found a getaway car and cash nearby.

Wilson also pleaded guilty to a 2019 escape attempt from the Jefferson County Jail in which he threatened a deputy with a Taser stun gun.
