Man found shot dead in parking lot of west Birmingham gas station
An investigation is underway after a man was shot to death early Saturday in west Birmingham.
Officers responded to the Exxon gas station in the 1100 block of Third Avenue West at 2:40 a.m. after the city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – indicated multiple rounds fired.
Once at the gas station they found a man unresponsive in the parking lot.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene. His identity has not yet been released but he is believed to be Hispanic.
The Exxon was closed at the time of the shooting, but is across the street from El Centenario nightclub, which was open.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said there is little information about what happened. Detectives were canvassing the area for witnesses and clues.
The man’s death marks the city’s 107th homicide this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal. Two of the homicides happened in previous years, but the victims died in 2024.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 134 homicides including the 107 in Birmingham.
No arrests have been made.
Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
