Birmingham man shot at age 17 in 1992 dies 32 years later, death ruled a homicide

A 49-year-old Birmingham man shot in 1992 has died, and authorities said his death was the result of the injuries sustained when he was a teen.

Birmingham’s North Precinct officers were dispatched at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, to a report of a person down at 920 Second Street North.

They arrived to find Erving Gray unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said Gray was shot Sept. 15, 1992 when he was 17.

The Jefferson County Medical Examiner’s Office reports Gray suffered a severe seizure because of his gunshot injury and has ruled Gray’s death a homicide.

A suspect was arrested in 1992 and charged with attempted murder. The suspect died in 1997.

Gray is Birmingham’s 104th homicide this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justified and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 131 homicides including the 104 in Birmingham.
