Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, longest-tenured FBS coach, to serve 1-game suspension

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, the longest-tenured FBS head coach in the country, will serve a one-game suspension for recruiting violations, according to multiple reports.

Ferentz, the Hawkeyes’ head coach since 1999, will sit out the Aug. 31 season-opener vs. Illinois State. Iowa wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr, a former special assistant to Ferentz, is also suspended for the same game.

Ferentz’s suspension is reportedly related to the recruitment of starting quarterback Cade McNamara, who came to Iowa from Michigan prior to the 2023 season. McNamara — who led the Wolverines to the Big Ten title in 2021 — committed to the Hawkeyes just three days after entering the transfer portal in December 2022.

McNamara is not the only recent Iowa transfer recruit about whom questions have been raised. Offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor transferred to Iowa from Alabama in January, and said in an interview soon after with a local TV station that a Hawkeyes staffer had texted him during the 2023 season.

Iowa admitted to a Level III NCAA violation (the least serious kind under the NCAA’s penalty structure) regarding Proctor’s recruitment. Proctor, an Iowa native, has since transferred back to Alabama and is expected to start at left tackle for the Crimson Tide this season.

Ferentz, 69, is 196-116 in 26 seasons at Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who went 10-4 in 2023, are ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press preseason poll.
