U.S. Marshals nab domestic shooting suspect after brief standoff at Birmingham motel

A man wanted in connection with a domestic shooting in Birmingham was captured earlier today by a team of U.S. Marshals after a brief standoff at a Birmingham motel.

Ricardo Loyola, 34, was found hiding under a bed in a room at the Relax Inn on First Avenue North on First Avenue North on the city’s east side.

Birmingham police earlier this week announced Loyola was wanted on a domestic violence shooting. He is suspected of shooting a woman in the arm.

Authorities said he was also wanted on a felony theft warrant out of Hoover, and violent crimes out of Arkansas.

Marshals surrounded the first-floor motel room late Wednesday morning. They announced they had a warrant and said, “We’re not going away. There’s going to be gas. There’s going to be a dog. It’s not worth it,” according to a Facebook live video.

Northern District of Alabama U.S. Marshal Marty Keely said ultimately made forced entry into the room after using chemical spray.

Loyola was taken to a hospital to be checked out, and then would be booked into the Jefferson County Jail.
