SEC Football by the Numbers: 10 single-game records that might never be broken
During the 2023 season, the SEC’s individual single-game record for yards of total offense was broken.
LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels passed for 372 yards and ran for 234 yards for 606 yards of total offense as he accounted for five touchdowns in a 52-35 victory over Florida on Nov. 11.
That broke the SEC mark of 585 yards of total offense established by Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello in a 44-34 victory over LSU on Aug. 26, 2020. Costello passed for 623 yards to smash the league single-game record of 544 passing yards that Georgia’s Eric Zeier had set in a 54-24 victory over Southern Miss on Oct. 9, 1993. That allowed Costello to set the total offense record even though he had minus-38 rushing yards against LSU.
Daniels’ game now stands as a superlative in the 91 seasons of SEC football. What performances might be ahead in the conference’s 92nd season that will join it in the record book?
It’s doubtful that anything that happens during the 2024 campaign will be able to eclipse these 10 single-game records:
Most punts, individual: 30
Kentucky’s Bert Johnson was a running back who carried the nickname “Man O’ War.” He played in the NFL for six seasons and punted 15 times as a pro — or half as many punts as he had in Kentucky’s 7-0 loss to Washington and Lee on Sept. 29, 1934. On that day, Johnson punted seven more times than any other SEC player has in a game. In 2023, Auburn’s Oscar Chapman punted nine times during a 27-10 loss to Texas A&M on Sept. 23 for the most by an SEC player last season.
Johnson had 1,155 punt yards against Washington and Lee, which is the most in SEC history in one game by 251 yards. The most yards in a game for an SEC punter in 2023 was 366 on seven punts by Arkansas’ Max Fletcher during a 24-21 loss to Alabama on Oct. 14.
An additional oddity about Johnson’s 30-punt game: He didn’t do all the Wildcats punting. Kentucky punted 36 times in the game.
Most points, team: 93
Ole Miss defeated Mercer 73-7 on Sept. 2 to reach the single-game high for points by an SEC team during the 2023 season. The Rebels needed three more touchdowns to break the league’s single-game scoring record. On Nov. 21, 1936, LSU posted a 93-0 victory over Southwestern Louisiana (now Louisiana). That came in the SEC’s fourth football season and broke the record of 92 points scored by Ole Miss against West Tennessee Teachers the previous year. LSU’s outburst against Southwestern Louisiana allowed the Tigers to lead the nation in scoring with 281 points in the 1936 regular season.
Four SEC teams have topped 80 points in a game in the 86 seasons since LSU’s 93-point victory, a feat most recently performed by Florida in an 82-6 victory over Central Michigan on Sept. 6, 1997.
Most rushing touchdowns, individual: 7
Old Miss halfback Arnold “Showboat” Boykin carried the football only 14 times in Rebels’ 49-7 victory over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl on Dec. 1, 1951, but half of his rushing attempts ended in the end zone. Boykin ran for 187 yards and seven touchdowns against the Bulldogs. He’s the only SEC player to score seven touchdowns in a game. Three other SEC players have scored six, with two getting them all on the ground. In NCAA FBS history, only two players have run for more touchdowns in a game than Boykin, and just four more have run for seven.
In 2023, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe had the SEC’s high for rushing touchdowns in a game with four in a 42-28 victory over LSU on Nov. 4.
Fewest yards allowed, team: Minus-30
Coming off its AP national championship in 1957, Auburn kicked off its 1958 season with a 13-0 conference victory over Tennessee at Legion Field in Birmingham. The Volunteers finished with minus-49 rushing yards and 19 passing yards. The SEC record book lists only one other game in which a league team held its opponent to negative yardage – Alabama’s 14-3 victory over Houston in 1962, in which the Cougars finished with minus-4 yards.
The fewest yards allowed in a game by an SEC defense in the 2023 season was 112, which was the total for the McNeese State offense in a 49-7 loss to Florida on Sept. 9.
Most interceptions thrown, individual: 9
When quarterback John Reaves left Florida, he had the most passing yards in college football history and the most touchdown passes in SEC history. The Associated Press had him on its All-SEC team in 1969, when he was a sophomore, and Time magazine chose him as its All-American QB in 1971, when Auburn quarterback Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy and finished ahead of Reaves for All-SEC honors. With teams in the NFL and USFL, Reaves was a pro from 1972 through 1987.
But on Nov. 1, 1969, Reaves threw 66 passes (at the time, the most by a player in SEC history and still tied for third on the league’s all-time list), and nine were intercepted by Auburn in the No. 17 Tigers’ 38-12 victory over the No. 7 Gators, who suffered their only loss of the season. Reaves also holds the NCAA FBS single-game record for interceptions thrown. Auburn finished the 1969 season with 34 interceptions, which was the SEC single-season record at the time.
In 2023, no SEC quarterback threw more than three interceptions in one game, and that occurred three times.
Most rushing yards, team: 748
Alabama’s wishbone ran up 748 yards on 63 rushing attempts in a 77-6 victory over Virginia Tech on Oct. 27, 1973. That’s 110 more rushing yards than any other SEC team has recorded in one game. Jimmy Taylor, Wilbur Jackson, Calvin Culliver and Richard Todd ran for at least 100 yards apiece for the Crimson Tide against Virginia Tech. Jackson ran 51 yards for a touchdown on the fifth play, and that turned out to be only Alabama’s third-longest TD run in the game. Calvin Culliver had an 87-yard TD run, and Taylor had an 80-yard TD run. With 85 passing yards, Alabama also set an SEC record with 833 yards of total offense in the game.
The second-place total happened way back in 1937, and the only other game in which an SEC team ran for more than 600 yards happened in 1942. No SEC team has come closer than 183 yards of Alabama’s total since the outburst, and last year’s high was 372 yards by Georgia in its 63-3 victory over Florida State in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.
Most points kicking, individual: 23
What makes the SEC record for the most points scored kicking in a game tough to beat is that there’s another record inside of it. When Florida’s Bobby Raymond scored 23 points in the Gators’ 53-14 victory over Florida State on Dec. 3, 1983, he became the second SEC player to make six field goals in one game, equaling the mark set by Auburn’s Al Del Greco the previous year. It’s been done five times since, including another time by Raymond. In addition to getting Raymond in position to kick six field goals, Florida also scored five touchdowns, and Raymond made the PAT after each. The closest any SEC player has come to Raymond’s record is 21 points by Ole Miss’ Jonathan Nichols, who had six field goals and three PATs in a 49-45 loss to Texas Tech on Sept. 27, 2003.
Most all-purpose yards, individual: 429
In the Kentucky’s 35-30 victory over South Carolina on Sept. 23, 1995, Moe Williams not only ran for 299 yards — a Kentucky single-game record and the sixth-most in SEC history — he also had 73 kickoff-return yards and 57 receiving yards. Every other game in the top 10 for all-purpose yards in SEC history has occurred since Williams’ record-setting performance, which would seem to indicate that his mark has been under constant threat. But Williams’ record remains 53 more yards — or 14 percent more — than the next-best showing in SEC history.
The SEC single-game high for all-purpose yards in 2023 was 321 – 205 rushing and 116 receiving — by Missouri running back Cody Schrader in a 36-7 victory over Tennessee.
Most receptions, individual: 19
LSU wide receiver Josh Reed’s record-setting game, part of quarterback Rohan Davey’s outburst of 528 passing yards, lifted the Tigers to a 35-21 victory over Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 3, 2001. Reed’s 19 receptions were two more than any other SEC player had had in a game, and there’ve been two 16-catch games and three 15-catch games in the 22 seasons since. Reed also set an SEC single-game record with 293 receiving yards in the game, but that mark has been exceeded twice since.
During the 2023 season, only SEC player had more than 11 receptions in a game. In LSU’s 41-14 victory over Mississippi State on Sept. 16, wide receiver Malik Nabers had 13 receptions.
Most punt-return yards, individual: 246
This SEC record has been around only since 2012, so it’s hardly stood the test of time. But Texas A&M’s Dustin Harris broke a record that had been around for 64 years, and he broke it by 43 yards — 22 percent more punt-return yards than the former mark. A cornerback, Harris got his yardage on eight returns in a 70-14 victory over South Carolina State on Sept. 22, 2012. Harris’ returns included one for a 2-yard loss and another for a 96-yard touchdown. His other returns went for 35, 35, 33, 25, 19 and 5 yards, and he had two fair catches.
In the 2023 season, the SEC high for punt-return yards was turned in by Texas A&M’s Ainias Smith, who had 131 on three returns in a 34-22 victory over Arkansas on Sept. 30.
