Files show no complaints against Hoover football coaches in previous job

A review of the personnel files of two former Hoover High School football coaches shows no documented complaints about them from previous employment in Jefferson County schools.

Jefferson County officials released the personnel files of former Clay-Chalkville coaches Drew Gilmer and Adam Helms after a records request by AL.com.

AL.com reviewed the files and found no disciplinary actions involving the former coaches. Hoover has not yet released personnel files.

Gilmer and Helms resigned from Hoover schools Aug. 9, after videos surfaced from Hoover football practices. The videos show coaching staff pushing a student, thrusting their hips at a player and tossing off a helmet.

Gilmer and Helms resigned from Clay-Chalkville in January to take the Hoover jobs. Helms previously had worked in Andalusia, Troy and Geneva County schools.

Former Albertville head coach Chip English has been named interim coach.

One Hoover High student now is threatening to sue for “extreme humiliation and physical abuse” his lawyer said he endured during a practice.

Hoover is a nationally-recognized football program. The Bucs won 11 state titles under a pair of former coaches, Rush Propst and Josh Niblett, and were featured in the series “Two-A-Days.”
