Follow along as Auburn’s Hugh Freeze updates his team’s progress at fall camp
With Auburn football’s season opener against Alabama A&M just 15 days out, the Tigers are the midway point of the second fall camp under second-year head coach Hugh Freeze.
The Tigers now have two full weeks of fall practices under their belt, as well as a fall scrimmage as Auburn took to Jordan-Hare Stadium for a live scrimmage last Saturday.
Set to meet with the media at 9 a.m., follow along with Freeze as he updates Auburn’s progress:
- Freeze opens his press conference in congratulating Auburn soccer for its upset win over No. 5 Clemson on Thursday night
- After Freeze mentioned seeing plays that might’ve been a bit too physical last week, Freeze said this week has a been a lot better in terms of having “clean” practices.
- Freeze says Auburn’s offense has “its best day” on Thursday. “There were very few bad or ugly things on the practice film yesterday.”
- Freeze added that Sam Jackson V, Robert Lewis and Camden Brown all had really good practices on Thursday.
- “It’s been a really impressive week for his understanding,” Freeze said of quarterback Payton Thorne.
- Freeze said he recently got a text from a friend checking in on fall camp and Freeze told him he “really likes this team” and that they’ve been operating on “hunger and humility, not entitlement.”
- “The O-line is one of the tighter groups that we have,” Freeze said of the offensive line’s continuity, adding that he does thing the O-line has a bit of a ways to go still. “There’s a couple spots we have to come better.”
- Freeze says Auburn center Connor Lew is frequently making the right calls, but it doesn’t always translate to the others along the offensive front.
- “His system is just one I was really impressed with,” Freeze said of defensive coordinator DJ Durkin.
- On kicker Towns McGough, Freeze says the freshman was a bit inconsistent at the start, but has been “much better” as of late, which shocked him considering the spring game.
- “I left that scrimmage feeling bad about the offense,” Freeze admits, adding that he felt better after watching the film. “I did feel better watching the film than I did leaving there. Now, Tuesday night, the offense kinda had its way.”
- Asked about other young guys who aren’t getting enough attention, Freeze said he would start with linebacker Demarcus Riddick, as well as freshman corner Jay Crawford, defensive lineman Malik Blocton and defensive lineman Amaris Williams. Freeze said offensive lineman DeAndre Carter is another, though he’s got a way to go with his body still.
- Freeze says he’s started to take the team through “mock games,” which includes all the details of pregame meals and all the finer details.
- Freeze says the young cornerbacks behind Keionte Scott and Kayin Lee have been “inconsistent” but adds that he is hopeful. “We need at least five of those guys to be ready to play, but it has been inconsistent.”
- Asked for differences in this year’s fall camp, Freeze said trying to decipher how physical and demanding he should be of his players has been more difficult.
- On the battle at the backup quarterback spot: “I kinda know in my mind where we’re heading next week… I kinda feel like we know where we’re heading with the reps,” Freeze said, adding that he wants to let the quarterback room know before saying too much.
- On the importance of the senior experience of KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Robert Lewis in the wide receiver room: “The competition in that room is elevating… It’s bringing out the best of those guys… I think we’re creating some really nice depth there.”
- On Payton Thorne: “He does some things out there that I’m really, really proud of,” Freeze said.
- Freeze says he’s and the Tigers’ offense have been using four different personnel groups. “I see us being more multiple in personnel,” Freeze said.
- Freeze says Jeremiah Cobb, Jarquez Hunter and Malcolm Simmons will be the main kick returners. Meanwhile, Malcolm Simmons, Perry Thompson, Keionte Scott and Bryce Cain are the likely punt returners.
