80-year-old state inmate dies at UAB Hospital after complaining of chest pains

An 80-year-old state inmate died earlier this week at UAB Hospital after complaining of chest pains.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified the inmate as Gary Wayne Moore.

Moore was serving a sentence at William Donaldson Correctional Facility for rape and sexual abuse out of Morgan County.

About 3 a.m. Monday, Moore was taken from the prison to UAB Hospital after complaining to staff that he was having chest pains.

He died at the hospital 9:39 p.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the autopsy showed no sign of trauma or foul play. The final cause of death is pending additional laboratory studies.

The Alabama Department of Corrections – Law Enforcement Services Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
