2 dead, 2 injured in domestic Birmingham shootings; police search for man who ‘snapped’

A manhunt is underway for a gunman who police say shot four people in Birmingham, killing two of them.

The shootings are believed to be domestic-related, and those close to the suspect told police he appears to have just “snapped.”

At 4;45 p.m. Thursday, West Precinct officers were dispatched to multiple people shot at a home in the 1600 block of Dennison Avenue.

Officers made entry into the house and found a woman dead from a gunshot wound.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they learned a man had also been wounded in the Dennison Avenue shooting, but he was not at the home when police arrived.

That victim showed at Princeton Baptist Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He has since been transferred to UAB Hospital.

Fitzgerald said officers learned that the suspect may have also fired shots in the 1400 block of 17th Place S.W., which is close to the first scene.

Police went to that home, again made entry, and found a man and woman inside. Both also had been shot.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced the man dead inside that home. The woman was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The shooter, Fitzgerald said, is either related to the victims, or at the minimum a close family friend.

The surviving man at the Dennison Avenue home is a family member of the shooter, Fitzgerald said, and the man dead at the second location is also kin to the suspect.

The female victims may not be blood-related but are well known to the suspect.

“So this is a shooter who knew every single person who he shot,’’ Fitzgerald said.

“This is a domestic-related shooting with multiple scenes, multiple victims,’’ he said. “This was not a random shooting.”

Police have completely saturated the area, and Star 1 helicopter is circling above. Multiple detectives have been brought in, as well as federal law enforcement.

“We want the public to know we’re holding off on releasing the suspect’s information at this time because we’re going to tap into those resources first and we don’t want to blow any leads that we may have developed already,’’ he said.

“We want to reassure the public this area is saturated with law enforcement personnel at this time,’’ Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said investigators don’t yet know what sparked the rampage.

“That is what is so scary,’’ he said. “No one knows.”

“This person is described as someone who has snapped,’’ Fitzgerald said, “and who has shot multiple people.”

The victims are the 96th and 97th homicides this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 122 homicides 2024, including the 97 in Birmingham.
