Paris Olympics: Auburn alumnus runs to heat victory
Former Auburn sprinter Ebony Morrison advanced to Friday’s semifinals in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the Paris Olympics by winning a race in the Repechage Round on Thursday.
Representing Liberia, Morrison won Heat 2 in 12.82 seconds.
Morrison had the second-fastest time among the 21 competitors in the Repechage Round, who were seeking six available spots in the semifinals.
Morrison ran 12.93 seconds in Heat 2 of Round 1 on Wednesday. That was good for a sixth-place finish and a spot in the Repechage Round. The top three finishers in each Round 1 heat and the three fastest runners outside those positions earned spots in the semifinals.
Also at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, on Thursday, Auburn sprinter Maka Charamba finished eighth in the medal race of the men’s 200-meter dash at 20.53 seconds.
Representing Zimbabwe, Charamba reached the final with a 20.31-second effort in the semifinals on Wednesday. Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo won the gold medal in an African-record 19.46 seconds.
Auburn sprinters Favour Ashe and Kayinsola Ajayi ran the first two legs for Nigeria in the men’s 4-by-100-meter relay. The team went a season-best 38.20 seconds, but that placed seventh in the first of the two heat races. The first three finishers in each heat and the next two fastest teams advanced to the medal race.
Ajayi ran the first leg for Auburn in the men’s 4-by-100-meter relay as the Tigers won the national title at the 2024 NCAA Outdoors Championships.
Representing Trinidad and Tobago, Alabama alumnus Portious Warren made her best toss on the final of her three attempts at 17.22 meters – about 56 feet, 6 inches – in the women’s shot-put qualifying. That ranked 22nd among the 31 women attempting to reach the medal round, but only 12 advanced.
Former Alabama golfer Stephanie Meadow, representing Ireland, had a four-shot improvement over the first round in the women’s golf tournament with a 2-over-par 74 on Thursday. Meadow had a roller-coaster second round with six bogeys, including four in a row on the back nine, and four birdies. At 8 over, Meadow is tied for 52nd halfway through the 60-golfer tournament.
First-round leader Celine Boutier of France ballooned to a 4-over 76 after carding a 7-under 65 on Wednesday. That helped Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux move into the lead at 8 under with a 6-under 66 in the second round.
