Observations from Alabama’s 6th camp practice: Offensive line, receivers and more

Alabama football took practice indoors Wednesday mornings, with the first portion of practice taking place inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility. It was the Crimson Tide’s sixth preseason camp session.

Reporters were allowed in for several periods. Players mostly worked with their position groups, but some drills shed some light on Alabama’s possible first-teamers offensively.

Offensive players and coaches will speak with media members later on Wednesday. Before that, here are our observations from the open portion of practice.

– Scheduled start time for practice was 9:20 a.m. CT. Reporters were let in beginning with the fourth period.

– Players were dressed in full pads for the first time, after wearing shells for the past several practices.

– The playlist for Wednesday’s practice included “Big Poppa,” by the Notorious B.I.G., “Miss Jackson” and “So Fresh, So Clean,” by Outkast and “September,” by Earth, Wind & Fire.

– Running backs worked on a drill where they had to duck an obstacle, make a catch, keep the ball while being poked with a hit stick, then avoid a rolling exercise ball before finishing through a cone.

– Quarterbacks threw screen passes for one drill, which featured the Alabama offensive line going through its blocking steps. The first-team group featured Kadyn Proctor at left tackle, Tyler Booker at left guard, Parker Brailsford at center, Jaeden Roberts at right guard and Wilkin Formby at right tackle.

– Elijah Pritchett, the other leading candidate for one of the Crimson Tide’s starting tackle rolls, worked on the right side with the second team.

– No Alabama players besides quarterbacks were wearing black jerseys to denote non-contact participants in practice. Furthermore, no players were on the exercise bikes inside the facility during the observable periods.

– Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler worked on coverage drills with the Crimson Tide safeties. Wommack emphasized playing the top shoulder to several players.

– The defensive line was difficult for reporters to see, but was working on swimming around dummies. Alabama’s inside linebackers went through pass rush drills during part of the observable time.

– The Crimson Tide quarterbacks worked on throwing passes to tight ends first. The group then transitioned to throwing to wideouts, without any defenders.

– The first group of Alabama receivers to go through the drill, which featured Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson and Austin Mack all throwing at once, was Kendrick Law, Kobe Prentice and Germie Bernard.

– The open time ended during the eighth period of practice. The Crimson Tide will return to the practice field on Thursday.
