70-year-old man killed in crash on I-65 in Shelby County; roadway shut down for investigation

A portion of Interstate 65 in Shelby County is temporarily shut down while authorities investigate a fatal crash that happened on Tuesday.

Lowell Sibley, 70, was traveling southbound on I-65 in Alabaster when he was struck by another vehicle about 3 p.m. Tuesday. The crash happened about one mile north of Alabaster.

The Oneonta man was taken to Shelby Baptist Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, said Shelby County Coroner Lina Evans.

Sibley was driving a Nissan Frontier that was hit by a Chevrolet Blazer driven by T37-year-old Tristan M. Rose, of Maylene.

After the initial crash, the Nissan Frontier overturned multiple times.

Sibley was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster where he was pronounced shortly after arrival.

ALDOT said all I-65 southbound lanes between exit 242 in Pelham and exit 238 in Alabaster shut down at 11 a.m. Wednesday for an unknown amount of time to allow the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to investigate the fatal crash.

Traffic will detour to Highway 31.

Sivley’s death is the second fatality on I-65 in Shelby County in two days.

On Sunday, 32-year-old Shahla J. Noori was killed when her vehicle struck the rear of an SUV.
