‘Different, generational stuff’: What Auburn players are saying about freshman WR Cam Coleman
Auburn linebacker Austin Keys didn’t try to impress with a creative or unexpected answer when asked which players on the offensive side of the football were having strong starts to fall camp.
“First? Probably Cam Coleman,” Keys told reporters with a bit of a chuckle on Monday afternoon. “He makes a spectacular catch every practice.”
Keys’ take on Coleman comes just two days after Auburn’s social media team posted a picture of Coleman making an acrobatic, one-handed snag during practice.
Seems fair to assume that catch falls under the umbrella of the type of “spectacular” Keys was referring to.
And allegedly, that kind of stuff happens frequently.
“This endzone, first practice field, back shoulder, think he went up and did a one-hand catch,” Keys said, gesturing as he told the story of another Coleman catch. “I don’t know if it was a one or two, but the dude’s got bunnies. It’s something I’ve never seen in my life, it’s just different generational stuff.”
Again, when Keys brought up Coleman, it didn’t come as a shock — not only because the gem of Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class has been gushed about since his signing in December, but because other Auburn players have taken notice, too.
“Cam Coleman, of course,” said Auburn wide receiver Robert Lewis when asked which pass-catchers were standing out to him.
Meanwhile, junior cornerback Champ Anthony is someone who has gotten awfully familiar with Coleman as the two sometimes find themselves lined up across from each other.
And when lined up across from the rookie receiver, the odds sometimes feel as though they’re stacked against the defender.
“50/50 balls? It’s really 60/40, 70/30 with him,” Anthony said of Coleman, adding that the safety often has to come over and help with coverage. “Cam Coleman, really from the spring, I feel like he’s gotten better, mostly on his routes. He’s been in and out of his breaks a lot more. Now that he sees the tempo in college football, he’s in and out of his breaks a lot more.
“But 50/50 balls? That’s Cam Coleman right there.”
Sophomore Kayin Lee, who head coach Hugh Freeze called an “NFL corner” earlier this week, told reporters that Penn State graduate transfer KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Coleman give him “the best work.”
“Cam is a youngin’, but he’s way above his age,” Lee said.
