Smoothing out a rough railroad crossing: Ask us

A reader asked, “When are Madison and Huntsville going to do something about the railroad crossing on Slaughter Road just north of Madison Boulevard? It’s been terrible at least since I moved here in 1997.”

Drivers on that stretch of road should have seen some recent improvement.

The crossing in question lies within the city of Huntsville, and the tracks belongs to Norfolk Southern Railway, which operates 1,304 miles of track in Alabama and employs over 1,500 people in the state. The northbound lane of Slaughter Road has a “Rough Crossing 15 mph” sign just before the crossing, which is on a slight rise.
