Is your Big Lots closing? List of almost 300 store set to close in U.S., multiple Alabama locations
Almost 300 Big Lots stores across the U.S. are closing as the discount chain struggles against economic headwinds and a slowdown in consumer spending.
Last month, financial filings from Big Lots showed it would close as many as 40 stores in the coming year. However, an analysis of the chain’s website by MassLive.com showed closure announcements were posted on pages for 289 stores. Big Lots currently has 1,389 locations, so the closures represent more than a 20% decrease in stores across the country.
Big Lots operates 29 locations in Alabama and initially included only the Troy store in the shutdown. However, location closing banners are now on pages for stores in Bessemer, Prattville, Sylacauga and the Huntsville location at Northwest Westside Centre.
Pages for each of the stores contain a banner that says, “Closing this location” and “Save up to 20%.”

Big Lots closed 52 locations in 2023.
In June, the company raised the possibility of bankruptcy, though it indicated in filings it had “implemented plans to reduce costs, improve sales and enhance its financial flexibility and liquidity.”
Big Lots reported sales dropped by 10% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023 with long-term debt increasing by more than $72 million.
