Suni Lee wins medal No. 3 at Paris Olympics: Former Auburn gymnast goes bronze on bars
Former Auburn gymnast Suni Lee anchored the lineup for the 2024 Paris Olympics’ women’s uneven bars finals on Sunday morning from Paris’ Bercy Arena.
Fortunately for Lee, the wait was worth it as she snuck onto the podium with a bronze medal-finish, securing her third medal of the Paris Olympics games and the sixth of her career.
After China’s Qiu Qiyuan and Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour highlighted the back half of the finals’ lineup with scores north of 15.000, Lee knew she was likely chasing a bronze medal, just as she secured four years ago in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
But this one meant more, Lee said in an interview with NBC following Sunday’s final.
“I think this one just meant so much more because last Olympics, I got the bronze medal but it obviously wasn’t the routine I wanted,” Lee said. “So this time, I was like, you know what, even if I make podium and get third place, whatever. It’s better than the routine I did last time.”
Albeit rolling with a more conservative routine, Lee went on to execute and finish with a score of 14.800.
“I’m so happy this time around because I feel like I did everything in my power to just keep the consistency coming and that’s exactly what I did today,” Lee said.
For Lee, Sunday’s bronze medal was the third of this year’s Olympic games as she helped Team USA to a gold medal-finish in the team final, followed by winning bronze in the all-around final alongside Team USA teammate Simone Biles, who clinched gold.
Lee is set to return to action in Bercy Arena on Monday morning as she looks to add to her medal haul in the balance beam final.
“There’s a lot left,” Suni said when asked what she had left in the tank after her long week in Paris. “I have so much more to redeem. Every single time I do a beam final, I never show what I’m capable of. So this time around, I’m just going up there and giving it my all.”
