Former Auburn gymnast Suni Lee wins bronze medal in all-around competition
Former Auburn gymnast Suni Lee won her second Olympic medal in three days with a bronze medal-finish in the dramatic all-around final in the 2024 Paris Olympics from Paris’ Bercy Arena on Thursday afternoon.
Lee beat Italy’s Alice D’Amato for third place by a razor-thin margin of 0.132.
And even doing that seemed unlikely through much of the all-around competition as Lee sat in seventh place after the first rotation, fifth place after the second rotation and was tied for fourth heading into the final rotation.
Not to be denied, Lee had just enough left in her tank to string together her best floor routine of her time in Paris.
After nailing her first tumbling pass, complete with a full-twisting double layout, Lee couldn’t help but smile as she finished up her near-perfect routine.
Needing a 13.535 to secure her place on the podium, Lee scored a 13.666 and flashed a grin as she cut away at her ankle tape.
Lee had done it. She’d made the comeback — and it was perhaps the greatest of her career considering the setbacks she faced due to a pair of kidney diseases that cut her 2023 campaign at Auburn short and kept her from training until earlier this year.
In winning bronze on Thursday, Lee captured the fifth Olympic medal of her career and her second of the 2024 Paris Olympics after she and the rest of Team USA won gold in the team final on Tuesday.
Thursday’s podium finish also gave Lee her second Olympic medal in the all-around competition, putting her in elite company.
Prior to this year’s all-around final, there had only been nine female gymnasts to win multiple Olympic medals in the all-around competition (h/t Justin Ferguson of the Auburn Observer).
That number now swells to 10 as Lee won a gold medal in the all-around final during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and a bronze medal on Thursday.
Simone Biles, Lee’s Team USA teammate secured gold in Thursday’s all-around final, while Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade claimed silver.
Lee’s stay in Paris will continue this weekend as she competes in the women’s uneven bars final on Saturday, followed by the balance beam final on Sunday.
