Norfolk Southern announces $200 million in Alabama projects

Norfolk Southern Railroad today announced upwards of $200 million in improvements along its 3B Corridor connecting northern and central Alabama to the Port of Mobile.

According to the company, the project involves 21 miles of new track constructed, as well as a mix of terminal and track-based infrastructure improvements. Included are projects in central and southwest Alabama, customer-specific projects in north Alabama and locations north of Mobile.

There will also be yard upgrades in Wilton and grade crossing improvements throughout the region.

The work should be completed by 2025.

Norfolk Southern operates more than 1,300 miles of track in Alabama, employing more than 1,500 employees, according to the company.

The 3B Corridor feeds into the Port of Mobile, with industries using rail to ship coal, paper products, agricultural products, automobiles, chemicals, steel and forestry products.

“Together with our customers, we are anticipating where markets are heading, and positioning to deliver on their supply chain needs now and into the future,” Norfolk Southern President and CEO Alan H. Shaw said in a statement. “These investments will bring immediate returns as they make rail an even more competitive part of our nation’s supply chain and expand our customers end-to-end solutions.”

Alabama Commerce Secretary Ellen McNair said the improvements are proof that companies are being drawn by the state’s pro-business policies.

“We look forward to the positive impact these enhancements will have on Alabama’s economic competitiveness and on the nation’s supply chain more broadly,” McNair said.
