What we saw at Alabama football’s 2nd preseason camp practice
Alabama football took the field Thursday in Tuscaloosa for its second day of preseason camp. Just as on the first day, media members were allowed to observe a portion of the practice, mostly individual and position group drills.
Alabama is still in the early going of camp, leading up to Kalen DeBoer’s debut as head coach, on Aug. 31 against Western Kentucky. Defensive coaches and players are scheduled to address the media after practice concludes.
Before that, here’s some observations from Thursday’s session.
– Media were allowed in starting with the fourth period of practice.
– The playlist for Thursday’s playlist included “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, “Victory Lap” by Nipsey Hussle, “Stranglehold” by Ted Nugent and “Super Gremlin” by Kodak Black.
– Players were in helmets with no pads for the second day in a row, donning practice jerseys and shorts.
– Besides the quarterbacks, no players were spotted wearing black jerseys, which signify non-contact participants in practice.
– The offensive line started out the observable period with blocking drills involving protective pads.
– LT Overton was not among the defensive linemen on the field for the Crimson Tide. That group worked several drills, including some one-one-one time, during the open periods.
– The temperature for the observable time was 88 degrees in Tuscaloosa, despite the 9:20 a.m. CT start. Players worked to maintain hydration, with some using cold towels as well.
– Quandarrius Robinson was spotted helping some of Alabama’s younger players with the finer points of the Tide’s new “Wolf” position.
– DeBoer started out with the offensive players, helping man training aids during ball security drills. He stayed largely with the quarterbacks and wideouts during the observable periods, but eventually made his way to the other field with the defensive players, observing Maurice Linguist and Colin Hitschler coaching the DBs.
– Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack was once again dressed in long pants and a hoodie despite the heat.
– Working with the outside linebackers, assistant coach Christian Robinson mimed quarterback steps during pass rush drills.
– The New Orleans Saints had at least three staffers in attendance. They were observed talking to Crimson Tide strength coach David Ballou.
– Linguist was animated at times coaching the defensive backs. He had players running through drills with a blocking sled, before eventually throwing passes during one-on-one coverage drills. He joked at one point that he owed cornerback Domani Jackson push ups after a poor throw.
– Media observation time ended after the eighth period of practice.
