Olympic commentator removed for ‘inappropriate’ remark about female swimmers
A broadcaster has apologized for what many are calling sexist remarks after being removed from Eurosport’s 2024 Summer Olympics coverage.
The comment was made about Australia’s women’s swim team.
Bob Ballard, the longtime swimming commentator, took to social media Monday to apologize, saying it was “never my intention to upset or belittle anyone.”
“The comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay victory ceremony on Saturday have caused some offense,” he posted on X. “It was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone and, if I did, I apologize. I am a massive advocate of women’s sport.”
He also shared, “I shall miss the Eurosport team, dearly and wish them all the best for the rest of the Olympics. No further comment will be issued. Thank you.”
On Sunday, per Deadline and The Independent, Ballard made the comment about Australia’s women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team.
“Well, the women (are) just finishing up. You know what women are like … hanging around, you know, doing their makeup.”
His comment came after the women — Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Meg Harris — exited the Paris Aquatic Center after winning a gold medal in the event.
Eurosport released the following statement:
“During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect,” the statement read.
