Texas man shot in hand by Mobile deputy sentenced to prison for gun and ammo possession
A convicted felony from Texas was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for possessing firearms and ammunition during an arrest in December in which he was shot in the hand by a sheriff’s deputy.
Hunter Bixler, 35, of Leander, Texas, was also sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kristi Dubose to a three-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison.
During his term of supervised release, Bixler will have to undergo substance abuse testing and mental health treatment.
Bixler’s sentencing stems from a Dec. 9, 2023, traffic stop that resulted in a Mobile County sheriff’s deputy shooting Bixler in the hand.
Bixler, according to authorities, was attempting to conceal a firearm during the traffic stop after failing to provide them with proper identification and, instead, giving them a false name and incorrect person identifiers.
According to a news release, Bixler “bladed his body towards” the passenger in the vehicle before abruptly turning back to the deputy who was on the driver side of the window.
“Fearing for his personal safety that he was about to be fired upon by Bixler, the deputy at the driver side window discharged his service weapon and hit Bixler in the hand,” according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.
Bixler was taken to a hospital where he received treatment for his injured hand. While in the hospital, he attempted to escape from custody and was quickly re-apprehended. An escape in the first-degree charge is still pending in Mobile County District Court.
Bixler had been previously convicted of two felonies and had outstanding warrants active in Texas.
