State Rep. Juandalynn Givan said she feels Vice President Kamala Harris – or whoever ends up being the Democratic presidential nominee – needs to solidify the party base and be prepared for “a street fight.”

“Whether it’s Harris, who I wholeheartedly support, or someone else, the Democrats have to get in line,” she said. “It’s time for Democrats to be damn Democrats.”

Givan, who was a Joe Biden delegate for next month’s Democratic National Convention, said she had heard a decision on Biden might be coming Sunday afternoon.

She called Biden a “very honorable man” for deciding to withdraw from the presidential race in the face of withering criticism following his June debate performance against former President Donald Trump.

“Many elected officials wouldn’t have done what the president did,” she said. “It just shows what kind of character he has.”

Givan said Democrats need to do work to attract Black women voters, young voters, and draw 15 to 20% of Black males.

“If you were watching the Republican National Convention last week, Donald Trump did something on Monday that had never been done there before,” she said. “He had not one, not two, not three, but four black men headline the speakers that night. He understands that 15 to 20% of Black males did not vote for (former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate) Stacey Abrams, which is one of the reasons she lost. Kamala, if she is the nominee, needs to build the base off all of those.”

She also said the nominee’s tactics must match that of Trump.

“It can’t be none of this, ‘If they go low, we go high,’” she said. “Not with Donald Trump. It’s going to be a street fight. You have to meet him in the middle of the street and ask, are you going to allow him to run over you?”
