President Joe Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race – and endorsement of Kamala Harris – opens the door for the vice president to receive the Democratic nomination. If so, that will set up a November matchup between Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump.

All polls comparing Harris and Trump were conducted prior to Biden’s exit though they shed light on how the VP could do if she is her party’s nominee.

The latest poll comparing Harris and Trump shows the Republican nominee enjoys a 3 percentage point lead – 51% to 48%. The poll by YouGov and CBS News was conducted July 16-18 amid growing calls for Biden to exit the race due to concerns about his health and floundering campaign. The same YouGov poll showed Trump with a 5-point lead over Biden.

The YouGov poll showed Trump led Harris by a double-point margin – 37% to 26% – when voters were asked which candidate would fight for regular voters.

YouGov poll included a sample of 2,247 registered voters with a margin of error of plus/minus 2.7%.

Other polls show Trump with a wider lead over Harris, one as much as 8 percentage points in a SoCal Research poll sponsored by On Point Politics. Trump led Biden by 6 percentage points in the same poll. That poll was conducted online July 17 with a sample of 800 registered voters with a margin of error of plus/minus 3.5%.

The national average of national polls from 538.com showed Trump at 43.5% compared to Biden’s 40.2%. Independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. polled at 8.7%.
