Prosecutor requests gag order in Casey White’s murder trials

Prosecutors are asking a judge to issue a gag order in Casey White’s murder cases.

“This case has received an inordinate amount of coverage from local, State and National media outlets,” Chris Connolly, the district attorney of Lauderdale County, wrote in a court filing on Friday.

Connolly said in the filing that public statements about the case “have the potential to taint the potential jury pool.”

The filing asks Lauderdale County Judge Benjamin Graves to prohibit the attorneys, police and representatives of the victims and White from talking to the press or speaking publicly about the case, except in the courtroom.

The judge has not ruled on the request.

Casey White was the subject of an 11-day manhunt earlier this year after the authorities say he escaped from the Lauderdale County jail with Vicky White (no relation), who was the assistant director of corrections. The authorities say that Casey and Vicky White had a jailhouse romance, communicating for months from behind bars.

Police have said Vicky White shot and killed herself as police in Indiana closed in to recapture them on May 9. The Lauderdale County district attorney brought a murder charge against Casey White, saying he should be held responsible because she died while he was committing a felony. Casey White is expected to plead not guilty at an arraignment hearing on Tuesday.

Casey White also faces a capital murder charge in the 2015 killing of Connie Ridgeway at her home in Rogersville.

Connolly is asking the judge to issue the gag order in both cases.

“This motion is being made in the interest of justice and in the interest of having being able to select an impartial jury to hear this case based on evidence submitted in the courtroom and not on information reported based on extra-judicial statements,” Connolly wrote in the court filing.
