‘Social gathering place’: Supper club in Fairhope heavily damaged in overnight fire
An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire at a longtime restaurant in Fairhope.
Firefighters with multiple agencies battled the blaze that erupted at 1:30 a.m. Monday at the Supper Club on Scenic Highway 98 southwest of Fairhope. No injuries were reported, but the building suffered extensive damage.
It took firefighters approximately 2 hours to get the fire under control. A Fire Marshall has been called in to determine the cause of the blaze.
The Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department, in a Facebook post, credited the support they got from agencies in Daphne, Barnwell, Magnolia Springs and Fish River Marlow.
Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan said the private club is best remembered by longtime Fairhope residents as Max’s Cafe.
“More than anything, like Max’s Cafe was, it had become a social gathering place,” Sullivan said.
She said the eatery had become a spot for Point Clear residents to gather socially. It was open only a few days a week — Thursday, Friday and Saturday, according to Sullivan.
“It’s been there a long time,” she said. “My guess is if a fire started that it was hard to contain. It was a small (venue).”
