Readers choose The Birmingham News top prep athletes of the year

AL.com readers selected their choice for boys and girls Athlete of the Year in the Birmingham area with an online poll.

The poll results agreed with The Birmingham News boys athlete of Clay-Chalkville’s Jaylen Mbakwe, but readers chose Oak Mountain’s Emma Hawkins instead of Hewitt-Trussville’s Sara Phillips.

Mbakwe received 33 percent of the vote for boys athlete and Corner’s Brendan Conner had 20 percent while Hawkins had 98 percent of the girls votes and Phillips had 1 percent.

Football star Mbakwe was selected ASWA Class 6A first-team all-state athlete and was a finalist for class Back of the Year along with being named the AL.com Birmingham Region Player of the Year. An Alabama signee, Mbakwe was the state championship game MVP and selected to play in the Under Armour All-America Game and the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game.

He completed 137-of-206 passes for 2,066 yards and 22 touchdowns, adding 149 runs for 1,036 yards and 23 scores as a senior.
