Alabama leaders call for prayers for Donald Trump after shooting at rally
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey posted a message of support for former president of the United States Donald Trump on Saturday, just minutes after apparent gunfire and secret service whisked him way from a podium in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“My thoughts and prayers are with President Donald Trump and his family,” Ivey posted on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “I ask Alabamians to join me in praying for his swift recovery.”
Trump campaign said in a statement that he was “fine,” while the Secret Service in a statement that “the former President is safe.”
A shooter is dead and a rally attendee was killed, the Butler County District attorney told The Associated Press.
The White House said President Joe Biden has received an “initial briefing” on the incident.
Other Alabama politicians took to social media, too.
“Wesley and I are praying for President Trump, and everyone at the rally,” Senator Katie Boyd Britt (R-AL) posted.
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed posted that he is I’m thankful Trump is safe following the attempt on his life.
“Though political rhetoric has become more divisive then ever before, political violence from either side is indefensible and a betrayal of what our democracy stands for,” Reed said.
“I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. Political violence of any kind has NO place in the United States of America. My thoughts are with former President Trump and anyone else who may have been injured,” U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell posted.
“God bless President Trump,” Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) posted. ” Our prayers are with him.”
