Huntsville Times Girls Athlete of the Year not focused on awards
The Huntsville Times Girls Athlete of the Year for 2023-24 was happy to hear that she was AL.com’s choice as the top performer, but she’s got a lot more on her mind.
“I feel great about getting an award,” Hazel Green basketball star Leah Brooks said, “but I try not to focus on awards because sometimes in basketball it gets very political. I don’t focus on rankings or when awards go out. It doesn’t show how hard I’ve worked.”
Working hard paid impressive dividends for the 6-foot-2 University of Alabama signee. Brooks earned consecutive Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 6A Player of the Year honors as a junior and senior. She earned The Huntsville Times Tennessee Valley Player of the Year honors for the second straight season.
