Best dual-threat QB? Cam Newton says it’s not him

Cam Newton ran for 75 touchdowns during his NFL career, more than any other quarterback in league history. The former Auburn All-American’s 5,628 rushing yards are exceeded only by Michael Vick’s 6,109 among all NFL QBs.

But in responding to a listener’s question during his “4th and 1” podcast last week, Newton named the Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson as the best dual-threat quarterback in football history.

Asked to expand to a top three, Newton said: “Lamar Jackson, Michael Vick. I’ll put myself up there.”

With 5,258 rushing yards in his six NFL seasons, Jackson might break Vick’s career record in 2024. In 2023, Jackson ran for 821 yards, and he needs 852 to surpass Vick.

But with 29, Jackson has a long way to go to catch Newton’s touchdown mark.

“Lamar’s style is a little different than mine,” Newton said. “He got big plays any play. He got speed that I never had, and he’s just electric. Vick same thing. Them dudes like fast, bro. And then like I played the game more powerful. I can run, but I might probably get caught. Vick, Lamar, they ain’t getting caught.”

On the other side of the dual threat, Newton had 32,383 passing yards and 194 touchdown passes in 148 regular-season games, Vick had 22,464 passing yards and 133 touchdown passes in 143 regular-season games and Jackson has 15,887 passing yards and 125 touchdown passes in 86 regular-season games.

On keeping with the subject of dual-threat ability, on the same podcast, Newton was asked to analyze his 49-yard touchdown run during Auburn’s 24-17 victory over LSU on Oct. 23, 2010. Each team had a 7-0 record entering the contest. Newton’s tackle-breaking touchdown broke a 10-10 tie in the third quarter.

“It’s a gospel song that says ‘He got the whole world in his hands. He got the whole world in his hands,’” Newton said. “When you make a play like that, you got the whole stadium in your hands. And to see people excited, looking at you doing what God has given you the ability to do and everything just line up straight … They not like me – like real talk. And do you want to know what’s the craziest thing? How many first-rounders was on that defense? You want to know something else? How many first-rounders was on that offense?”

Newton won the Heisman Trophy for the 2010 season as Auburn completed its schedule without a loss to win the BCS national championship.
