Man dead after being hit from behind at US 280 red light in Sylacauga

A driver was killed when he was hit from behind while stopped at a Sylacauga traffic light.

The Talladega County Coroner’s Office identified the fatality victim as Joshua Andrew Harris. He was 41 and lived in Sylacauga.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 280 and Fort Williams Street.

Coroner Shaddix Murphy said four vehicles were stopped at the light, waiting to turn onto Fort Williams Street, when a pickup truck crashed into Harris’s vehicle.

The impact caused a chain reaction involving the other three cars waiting at the red light.

Harris was pronounced dead on the scene. Other motorists sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“Yesterday afternoon, our community was shaken by a tragic accident on Hwy 280,’’ the Sylacauga Police Department posted on Facebook. “Our hearts go out to the families affected by this heartbreaking incident.”

“During times like these, the strength and solidarity of our community become our greatest assets,” the post read.

The Talladega County Sheriff’s Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Troopers, and the Sylacauga Fire Department also responded to the scene.

“Please join us in keeping the victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers,’’ police wrote. “We encourage everyone to exercise caution on the roads and remain vigilant to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
