Man arrested after young missing mother found dead in Fayette County: ‘A tragedy for our community’
A 21-year-old Alabama mother reported missing in Fayette County was found dead, and the last person seen with her has been charged in her slaying.
Family members reported Laci Whitson missing, saying she was last seen on Wednesday, June 26, in Florence.
They said Whitson had been picked her up by Michael Wade Tucker and was last seen walking away from his residence.
Her phone had been turned off.
On Sunday, her father, Larry Whitson, posted on Facebook that his daughter had been found dead, wrapped in a blanket in a wooded area. “Oh God,” he wrote, “get me through this.”
In a press release issued Tuesday, Fayette County Sheriff Byron Yerby said Tucker, 36, is charged with murder in Whitson’s slaying. Authorities have not said how she was killed.
Yerby said sheriff’s investigators, State Bureau of Investigation agents, and the 24th Circuit District Attorney’s Office processed the scene and collected multiple items of evidence.
Tucker was charged, he said, within 24 hours of Whitson’s body being found.
“This is a tragedy for our community, and we have families that are hurting,’’ Yerby said. “We ask that you keep these families in your prayers. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of Laci Whitson.”
Whitson leaves behind a young son. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel.
The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 205-932-3205.
